AIAIAI↗ is a project focusing on exploring and facilitating the use of artificial intelligence within artistic practices.
Tools for things and ideas↗ (finished in 2021) was a research project that aimed to enrich the public domain of 3D-print technologies and media with a series of artistic propositions and productions. Faculty, invited guests and ex-students were involved in this project.
Radio Roeien Met Riemens (finished in 2020) was a short-term research project on radio making, initiated by a group of students. A central archive is being assembled with sound fragments from all kinds of sources; music, but also field-recordings of nature walks. This archive was made public via an internet radio channel and events.
Virtual Reality @ KASK (finished in 2020) researched the possible uses of VR as an artistic, narrative medium, and as a virtual venue for exhibitions and performances.
Media art is a broad and constantly evolving field: from pre-cinema to post-internet, from bio art to artist film, from performance to the development of new soft- and hardware. It is an umbrella term for forms of art making that specifically use forms of media and technology in order to create poetic images and situations.
Within the studio, the core of the programme, students develop their own artistic language by building an autonomous body of work. This process takes place in continuous dialogue with studio teachers and fellow students, with work regularly discussed during collective presentations.
In practical classes, students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in media such as audio, photography, video, programming, and electronics. Theory supports artistic practice by offering frameworks and encouraging reflection, both spoken and written. While the bachelor’s programme focuses on shared theoretical courses such as art history and philosophy, master’s students compose an individual trajectory through seminars and masterclasses.
You can find the full programme of our trajectory here↗.
Throughout the year, the programme organises workshops, lectures, exhibitions, screenings, and performances, in collaboration with both internal and external partners. These projects foster collaboration and offer opportunities to engage with current artistic and societal issues.
Our guest-list both emerging talents and more established names.
We also regularly go off-campus, visiting museums, studios, and festivals to experience the artistic field up close.
The studio is housed in a former textile school in Ghent, within walking distance of the Bijloke site. The spaces are both flexible and specialised, with facilities for video editing, 3D, game design, virtual reality, and sound and music.
Various equipment loan services allow students to access a wide range of materials, from basic tools to highly specialised equipment.
The studio is more than a workspace: it is a shared environment that encourages experimentation, exchange, and engagement. Students are given the space to take initiative, explore, fail, and begin again.
a glimpse into the studioThe programme is also actively involved in artistic research. Students encounter this through teaching by researcher-tutors, workshops, shared expertise, and access to infrastructure. Two research labs are currently embedded within the Media Art studio: Formlab↗, a workshop for digital fabrication, and Laboratorium↗, an experimental lab for art, design and biotechnology.
These research projects are currently ongoing or have been completed.
Media Art has been firmly established at KASK for nearly 20 years. Since the first master’s student graduated in 2008, many alumni have gone on to build careers in the field. They work as independent artists or within the audiovisual and broader creative sectors, the performing arts, or education.
