Media art is a broad and constantly evolving field: from pre-cinema to post-internet, from bio art to artist film, from performance to the development of new soft- and hardware. It is an umbrella term for forms of art making that specifically use forms of media and technology in order to create poetic images and situations.

Within the studio, the core of the programme, students develop their own artistic language by building an autonomous body of work. This process takes place in continuous dialogue with studio teachers and fellow students, with work regularly discussed during collective presentations.

In practical classes, students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in media such as audio, photography, video, programming, and electronics. Theory supports artistic practice by offering frameworks and encouraging reflection, both spoken and written. While the bachelor’s programme focuses on shared theoretical courses such as art history and philosophy, master’s students compose an individual trajectory through seminars and masterclasses.

You can find the full programme of our trajectory here.

The studio is housed in a former textile school in Ghent, within walking distance of the Bijloke site. The spaces are both flexible and specialised, with facilities for video editing, 3D, game design, virtual reality, and sound and music.

Various equipment loan services allow students to access a wide range of materials, from basic tools to highly specialised equipment.

The studio is more than a workspace: it is a shared environment that encourages experimentation, exchange, and engagement. Students are given the space to take initiative, explore, fail, and begin again.

The programme is also actively involved in artistic research. Students encounter this through teaching by researcher-tutors, workshops, shared expertise, and access to infrastructure. Two research labs are currently embedded within the Media Art studio: Formlab, a workshop for digital fabrication, and Laboratorium, an experimental lab for art, design and biotechnology.

These research projects are currently ongoing or have been completed.

Media Art has been firmly established at KASK for nearly 20 years. Since the first master’s student graduated in 2008, many alumni have gone on to build careers in the field. They work as independent artists or within the audiovisual and broader creative sectors, the performing arts, or education.
